GOP Primary Candidates Line Up to Challenge Incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth
The GOP primary field is crowded with those seeking to challenge U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, as her first six-year term draws to a close.
Duckworth is running unopposed, meaning that, unless someone drops out of the race, whoever wins the Republican primary vote on June 28 will face off against Duckworth in the Nov. 8 general election.
Duckworth, an Army veteran and former director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, is projected by some to win. The race is rated as solidly Democratic by Cook Political Report, a non-partisan group that analyzes federal elections.
What Republicans are running?
Casey Chlebek is a former information technology professional who worked at Aldens, Zenith Radio Corp., and Northern Trust Bank. Since leaving IT, he has worked with several civic and Polish-American organizations. Chlebek made an unsuccessful run for Sen. Dick Durbin’s seat in 2020, losing the Republican primary with 5.6% of the vote.
Chlebek identified key areas of his agenda at a forum with the conservative group Illinois Family Action. These priorities include investing in emerging technologies like 5G as well as creating safer communities “without crime, without delusional CRT (critical race theory), without open borders,” according to a press release from his campaign.
Matthew Dubiel is the general manager of WCKG, a radio station based in Elmhurst. Dubiel entered the race with a focus on educational issues. He is one of the signatories of the Awake Illinois Parents Bill of Rights pledge.
Dubiel said in his response to an SJ-R candidate questionnaire that he hopes people will “rally behind” him as others have rallied behind Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Peggy Hubbard is a Navy veteran, former police officer, and retired IRS analyst. Like Chlebek, Hubbard also ran unsuccessfully in the 2020 Senate election, coming in second in the primary with 22.9% of the vote.
Robert “Bobby” Piton is the founder of PreActive Investments, an investment firm based in St. Charles. Piton has appeared at events with Michael Flynn, a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory who said former President Donald Trump should suspend the U.S. Constitution.
“We should make executions for treason great again,” said Piton at a November 2021 event where he alleged widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.
Kathy Salvi is a personal injury lawyer from Chicago. Salvi previously ran for Congress in Illinois’ 8th congressional district in 2006, though she lost a six-way Republican primary. Salvi’s husband is former state Rep. Al Salvi, who lost to Durbin in the 1996 U.S. Senate election.
“I am running for U.S. Senate to restore faith in our government and provide Illinoisans the leadership they deserve,” said Salvi in a statement when she launched her campaign. “The policies of the radical left have failed our children in the classroom, made our communities less safe, and forced many businesses to close.”
Jimmy Lee Tillman II is the son of musician Jimmy Lee Tillman and former longtime Chicago Ald. Dorothy Tillman. Tillman is a perennial candidate, having also run in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020 in the Republican primaries for Illinois’ 1st U.S. House district. U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush won each of those elections.
“The Illinois GOP is tired of losing,” said Tillman in an April statement. “They want to win! They are tired of sending candidates to Cook County without a chance.”
Anthony Williams is a pastor at King International Minstry United Church of Christ in Chicago and has been an advocate for gun violence reduction.
In June of last year, he made headlines when he walked from Chicago to Washington, D.C. as a way to call for an end to nationwide gun violence.
Williams unsuccessfully ran in the 2013 special election for the U.S. House Second District. He ran as a Democrat and earned 1.1% of the vote in the primary.
In addition to Duckworth and the Republican candidates, the Libertarian party has also fielded someone for the race: Chicago accountant Bill Redpath. He is the managing director of the Chicago office of Summit Ridge Group, where he does business valuations in the media and telecommunications industries.
“The two-party system fails to provide voters with a sufficient number of political choices,” wrote Redpath in his response to SJ-R’s candidate questionnaire.
The primary is June 28. The election is on Nov. 8.
Voters will have two opportunities to cast ballots for someone to represent them in Congress. The first vote on June 28 is the primary election, where voters from each party select who appears on the ballot in the fall. In Illinois, anyone can vote in a primary, though you can only vote in contests from one party. On Nov. 8, all voters will be asked to select the election’s winners from between candidates of different parties.

Educational background: Matt Dubiel is a small business owner and entrepreneur. He owns WCKG AM 1530 in Elmhurst, Illinois, and worked his way up the Chicago radio ranks from Intern to Owner.
Family background: Matt was born in Hinsdale, raised in Westmont and Downers Grove, and spends his summers fishing in Wilmington/Braidwood/Coal City. Matt has been married to his wife Michelle for 20 years. They have four children ranging from 20 to 10 years old.
Agriculture is one of downstate Illinois’ biggest industries. What key changes would you seek in federal ag policy to benefit Illinois farmers?
Keep the government out of our farms. The government should be advocating for our farmers, not limiting or controlling them. We need more protection for the farmers, and the people they provide for.
Toxic political polarization has permeated the landscape. How will you work to heal the divide?
I’m running for office to get a focus back on real issues Americans are facing. The toxic landscape is permeated by the woke liberal agenda and the media that’s pushing this garbage. I’ll be an example of leadership and integrity the people of Illinois can get excited about. Right now, we have Durbin and Duckworth pushing their big tech, big pharma, and big government agenda to the people. Matt Dubiel will push the agenda of We the People to D.C. The people of Illinois will have a person in office they can rally behind when they elect Matt Dubiel for U.S. Senate, the same way people get excited about leaders like Rand Paul, Jim Jordan, and Ron DeSantis. When you vote for someone who is the “real deal” like Matt Dubiel, I will have your back.
In 2020, a record 45,222 people died from gun injuries in the U.S. including suicide and murder, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. What, if anything, should be done to control guns?
In Illinois, 45,000 unborn died from abortions in 2020. 45,000 more died in 2021. Right now, Illinois is on track for 45,000 or more to die of abortion in 2022. That’s just one state. So are we talking about safety for all? JB locked the state down and killed our economy in Illinois for COVID, but no one shut the state down for the babies we are losing every year. Tammy Duckworth wants to “work to codify abortion into law” if re-elected. That’s her focus. My focus is on fixing our inflation issue, fixing our border, and standing for America First. Gun safety and gun rights are embedded into our Constitution. We need more trained lawful citizens with guns. We need to allow our police to do their jobs and we need to prosecute criminals. Illinois can not be a sanctuary state and let Chicago’s crime problem infect the state. Illinois needs to void the foid & return gun safety and training to high schools.

Why are you seeking this office?
It’s 2022, and truckers are representing us in D.C. because our elected officials are not. Matt Dubiel is running for US Senate to represent the PEOPLE of Illinois who want our economy, medical freedom, schools, communities, and freedoms BACK.
Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.
The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is the economy, and the first step in fixing it is voting out ALL who stood by while it was shut down. We must vote out all who are printing and spending our money overseas. I will not stand by while our economies are shut down, and I will not vote to waste the taxpayers’ money on bloated spending inside the USA or in foreign countries. I will read the bills before voting on them. I will not vote for pork spending. I will not vote for abortion or trans surgery spending. We need to finish the border wall, remove the incentives for illegals and restore our manufacturing and supply chains in the USA. We must make things in America again.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
Matt Dubiel is the only candidate with a solid grasp of all the issues facing the people of Illinois, from a family perspective. No other candidates are focused on the assault on our children in school, via CRT/SEL early Sex Ed, mask mandates, and vaccine mandates. Matt is the only true America First candidate who believes in less government and less spending. Matt is a regular middle-class family man who will serve one term only and inspire Illinois to return to common sense and normalcy.
If you are challenging an incumbent, how would you perform differently if elected?
Matt will actually show up to vote in the Senate. Tammy Duckworth has a high no-show rate. She and the rest of congress vote on bills they do not read, and they vote to send billions to help foreign countries while Americans struggle. Matt will read the bills before voting. Matt will not fund foreign wars and governments. Matt will not fund abortion and gender issues. Dubiel will support securing our border and restoring our economy.
How would you characterize the events of Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol?
Let our court system handle that. We have an economy that’s in trouble, runaway inflation, a border crisis, and an administration and congress sending billions to Ukraine while Americans suffer. Where is the outcry for our cities across America that were burned and destroyed during those “peaceful” protests? America and our media need to get our priorities straight. Our country is in deep trouble, and we need to fix our economy, crime, and our border immediately.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
For starters, I will spend all my time (when not in session) in Illinois with the people of Illinois. I give my personal number to everyone now. That’s not changing. I will call people back. I will not send these epic and evasive form letters our current Senators foist upon their constituents. I will work FOR the people. I will also be using social media to connect with the people of Illinois instead of talking down to them while selling them on woke policies, spending, or printing “national dog day”. Our Representatives aren’t cruise directors or pitchmen for big tech and big pharma. We are the voice of the people of Illinois and as Senator, I will BE one of the people of Illinois. I will already be at the school board meeting bringing attention to issues MY fellow Americans need help with. We don’t need Senators at ribbon cuttings for photo ops. We need Senators standing with parents at school board meetings, and standing with nurses, cops, vets, students, and our military to support their medical freedom. You will see Matt Dubiel standing beside them, advocating for them in the mainstream media, and connecting directly with the people via social media, zoom calls, and forums.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
I am an outsider. I am not aligned with special interests or funded by special interests. I am a real guy who’s standing up for my family the way I will stand up for yours, our rights, and our constitution. What we’ve been doing does not work. It’s time to get back to the core of self-government and send real people to represent real people. I am the real deal and my life and track record support that. Party politicians and insiders are selling us out. We can not stand for this any longer.
What was your first paying job, and what did you learn from it?
I started a lawn mowing business when I was very young. I learned how to work. My first paycheck came from Aurelio’s pizza in Downer Grove. I was 14. I worked 2-3 jobs at once until I was about 25 years old. My kids all work. I believe opportunity looks a lot like work.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
Find a career you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
You’ve got a guy, his name is Matt Dubiel. We the people have the power. So it’s not up to straw polls, or the GOP, or some special group. Fundraising doesn’t matter. What matters is getting the RIGHT people who will stand for the RIGHT things. Matt Dubiel will stand up for you and cannot be bought. Now it’s up to the people.
